In many countries, people living with HIV experience severe stigma, and are either too afraid to seek out life-saving medication, or are outright denied it. With your support, Immigration Equality represents and advocates for LGBTQ and HIV-positive people fleeing this persecution and seeking safety in the United States.

Having a lawyer can mean the difference between a new life in the U.S., and being deported to a country where your odds of survival are slim. Immigration Equality provides asylum seekers who could not otherwise afford a lawyer with a free attorney. We fight for our community, and we win 99% of the time.

To date, we have secured asylum for more than 1,000 LGBTQ and HIV-positive people. People like Ishalaa, a powerful, inspiring Mexican transgender activist. Ishalaa was the lead spokesperson for her local LGBTQ rights group in Mexico and organized protests against an anti-LGBTQ gubernatorial candidate in her state. After receiving death threats, Ishalaa made the difficult decision to flee for safety in July 2013. After presenting herself at the U.S. border, Ishalaa was locked away in detention for over a month before she was released on bond. Two and a half years later, we argued the case before the Immigration Court and we won!

Your support helps Immigration Equality to fight:
  • In the courts, where we have been the leaders in establishing the right for LGBTQ and HIV-positive people to seek asylum in the U.S., and where we are now fighting for LGBTQ bi-national families
  • In the congress, where we work to ensure that laws protect our community
  • And in the court of public opinion, by raising awareness about the issues facing the communities we serve and by introducing the public to our inspiring clients!
You may also make your gift by downloading and completing our donation form and sending it to or mailing it to Immigration Equality, Attn: Development Department, 40 Exchange Place, Suite 1300, NY NY 10005.

Across one year, here is how your support can impact the life of refugees seeking asylum who identify as LGBTQ or living with HIV:
  • $30 provides transportation for 5 clients to meet with their attorneys
  • $100 affords an immigrant a free legal consultation
  • $350 supports an intake clinic for 10 immigrants in need
  • $1,000 empowers a client with legal representation for six months
